From 1995 until December 2007, one graduate was selected to receive the Gregory Forbes Memorial Award.
Gregory Forbes was one of the first Youth Apprentices in New Brunswick. He was a member of the initial group of 26 from across the province that piloted the program, starting in July of 1993. Thirteen students from that group were awarded the first YAP certificates. At the provincial graduation in 1995, at the request of both students and coordinators, a certificate in Greg's name was presented posthumously to his parents, Fred and Clara Forbes.
A student of Simonds High School in Saint John, Greg had been diagnosed with cancer before entering the Youth Apprenticeship program. In spite of this challenge, he consistently demonstrated a commitment to helping the province pilot the Youth Apprenticeship Program. He maintained a focus on future goals, and showed both courage and humour as he faced difficulties presented by his illness. Greg won the hearts of his classmates and inspired them to be equally committed.
His death, only months before the first YAP graduation, led classmates to request that a memorial award be created in his name. Through this, they could assure that Greg's goal of 'not being forgotten' would be realized.
The Greg Forbes Memorial Award is presented annually at the Youth Apprenticeship Graduation ceremony of School Districts 6 & 8. It is presented to a graduating YAP student who has demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment to and understanding of the Youth Apprenticeship Program.
